Number Chart Fun
by Dena Wood

I have a set of cards to be used with a hundreds number board that I enjoy using with my younger kids. The cards are put out by Cuisenaire and list a riddle at the top of the card. For example, the first card says, "I am last. What am I?" This is followed by a list of numbers that you read out as your child  covers them on a hundreds number chart.

Unfortunately, I recently went to use the cards with my six year old and could not find our hundreds board. I quickly went online thinking I could find one to print off. I had no trouble finding one, but also happened upon this
interactive hundred number chart.  I did print out the blank chart to have on hand (legos work as great markers) but let my son use the online version which was great fun. Your child can pick the color of "crayon" they want then click in each space to mark the appropriate number. If they make a mistake they can correct it by coloring it white again.

Whether you use the online or paper version, you can easily make sets of these cards for yourself. Simply print out a few blank charts and color in simple shapes; a tree, windmill, different letters, etc. Then come up with a riddle for each one. Tell your child the riddle, then read off the numbers you colored on your chart, allowing him to mark them on his.

If you want to get REALLY fancy, you could find a simple design in a cross-stitch book to copy from. Then use the online chart, having your child switch colors as appropriate
.
