| Remember Those States!
by Jennie von Eggers As the co-author of Times Tales, you can imagine that mnemonics are a frequently used tool in our home. I like to challenge my children to come up with their own memory tricks when the need arises. The things kids come up with can be quite quirky and humorous, which actually makes it easier for them to remember! Below are a few mnemonic tricks to get kids started on memorizing the states. See what your kids can come up with for the rest of the fifty states. Kentucky- Looks like a leg of fried chicken (think KFC). Utah- You can almost see the letter "U" in Utah Florida-With water surrounding it, looks like there might be a FLood! Louisiana- You can see the letter "L" in that state! Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts- For the first 3 northern states think, M 'n M! Minnesota- Looks like someone crushed a soda ("sota") can. Washington- Can you see all that WAter (Puget Sound) trying to come in? ______________________________________________ |
